Economy with impact: young people with leadership capacity who create companies to bring about a social change

Between millennials, many consider that its labor activity must go of the hand of the restlessness to improve the surroundings; six cases.

Sofa Terrile

He was written much and they were spoken to envelope. One labeled them of €œnarcissistic€, €œcomfortable€ and €œaddict to the technology€. Other times one proclaimed them €œexpressive€, €œcreative€ and €œopened to the change€. The young people of the generation and, millennials, received considerable attention but the labels that took to that I-I am spoken of a €œgeneration of€ do not seem to fit with the profile of the young leaders in social undertakings. In 2014, a study of Brookings Institution, a American organization for charity dedicated to the investigation, investigated in the habits of consumption of millennials and discovered that the majority of them considers as crucial factor, to decide where to buy, the involvement of the brands in social causes. It studied it indicated that great part of the generation and is more loyal to the companies that they look for to solve specific problems. Simple young idealism or a convergence of generational factors and context?

€œTo the new generations it costs more to independently think his race to them of the reality in which Mara M©rola live-explains, coordinator of the program for young people of the NGO Ashoka, that promotes the social emprendedorismo. At the same time, there is in millennials an increasing tendency to design the places where they want to work and to be created to themselves€.

At what moment the empathy and the desire were combined to lead projects? Gabriel Berger, director of the Center of Social Innovation of the University of San Andres, brand three key points in the history of the generation and Argentinean. First, the sprouting of several NGO as Ceiling, led by young people who inspire. The second, the growth in the last decade of the plans of voluntary military service in the schools. And the third party, the increasing idea of emprendedorismo in the society and the increasing presence of organizations who promote social and environmental initiatives, such as the NGO Ashoka and the accelerators Socialab and Njambre.

What value adds a young leader to a social project? €œThe spirit of risk and thinking about solutions that are not the obvious ones€, he thinks Paula Cardenau, co-founder of Njambre. Mara M©rola adds another characteristic: €œThe capacity to inspire: there is an effect very great contagion in youth€.

And the challenges? Beyond the disadvantages of the social entrepreneurs generally, as the difficulties to secure funding, Berger it emphasizes to the €œimpatience€ of the new generations as a weapon of double edge: although it is valuable to happen to the action, also €œit is good for studying, for organizing themselves, to pick up the learning of others€.

Six projects that inspire

La Naci³n talked with six young people born between 1980 and 1995 whom they look for to leave his track in the ecosystem of social undertakings.

Ada IT

Mara Celeste Medina is 26 years old and began to think Accepts, its undertaking, from a deficiency in its labor scope. The student of Engineering in Systems of the National Technological University observed a low feminine presence in the technology and, with Ezequiel Gonz¡lez developed, in 2014, a company of IT that employ women and offer services of development and testing of software. €œWe created and we proved applications Web and mobiles for companies and organizations, and make software to size€, details Medina.

In addition to reducing the breach of sort in the technology, Ada IT - that stops this year projects income by $ 350,000 - manages social impact through work in network with foundations to enable. €œTo generate opportunities for others it is a unique sensation by which it is worth the pain to work - reflects the Co-founder of the project, that obtained the first resources of the contest €œDefies to you€ organized by the Government of the City of Good Airs. As well, the ecosystem of social undertakings is in its initial stages and is an opportunity to turn to you into pioneer in your thematic one€.

The Tip

Marcos Heyd is an untiring entrepreneur who failed in three projects before creating the Tip. After being received in the Blas Pascal University of lawyer in Institutional Communication, its race in the NGO began Argentine Furrows, that the installation of organic kitchen gardens in towns of the city of Cordoba promotes in emergency. It was then when it made the €œclick on the reality and have to be citizen€.

In its work near the towns, Heyd, of 28 years, discovered that in the periphery of the humblest districts there were enormous rubbish batteries. It summoned to engineer friendly so that they helped it to investigate recycling alternatives and by the end of 2013 the Tip was born, dedicated undertaking to crush and to classify residues of construction and demolition to create a substitute of the sand. The objective for this year is to reduce 20,000 tons of remainders, and Heyd hopes to triple that number in 2016. In addition, it wants to obtain a national law of rubbish control and wishes to be an inspiration for those who their same objectives persecute: €œThe new economy of the social emprendedorismo allows to encourage to that the competitors grow, since all we looked for to hit positively and the market still is very ample€.

Natalia Ca and Gabriel Marcolongo, of 31 and 32 years, knew themselves when they were adolescent. Many years later, the restlessness to generate a positive change in the society and nostalgia by the days of voluntary military service in the secondary one he took them to create Incluyeme.com, a portal of use online for people with incapacity. €œNo wanted to continue working by a pay for somebody more than it did not generate a positive change in the country or the continent€, affirms Ca. €œIn Latin America, 80% of the people with incapacity are unemployed, a greater index ten times to the one of those who does not have incapacity€, the lawyer in Public Relations says.

With his plan of regional expansion in mind, they traveled to Chile to participate in a contest of the Corporation of Promotion of the Production (Corfo), a state organism in charge to impel the production in the country. They were selected and they acceded to US$ 40,000 to be able to be with his activity also in the neighboring country. Today, thanks to the help of the accelerator 500 Startups, they develop offices in Mexico. They managed to use to more than 200 people with incapacity and already involved to more than 50 companies. For this year they project income by $ 500.000. The initial investment was with own money and of the contest ImpacTec of the Buenosairean government and Socialab.

In 2013, Patricio Diedrichs and its friendly Rodrigo Ramallo and Nat¡n Deyheralde they were joined in the garage of its house to create furniture with pallets that they collected of the street. What began as a hobby quickly were professionalized thanks to a page on Facebook and to the feedback of its followers. €œWith the silver that entered we bought machines that allowed us to work at greater speed, Diedrichs counts, of 26 years. To the three months we move to a factory in Garn, from which we fixed with the companies of the zone so that they allowed us to retire pallets which they have as remainders€. Thus the M¼hl company was born.

Diedrichs, lawyer graduated in the University of Buenos Aires speaks of a situation win-win for both actors: €œThe factories gain space in their deposits and avoid the burning fire of pallets; we received raw material and recycle€. M¼hl already created different units from businesses: in addition to the sale of furniture to individuals, spaces are decorated and they rent livings for events.

Recently more than two years, Mariano Utin, who today has 35 and is licensed in Administration of Companies, decided to contribute to €œconscious Capitalism€ that he creates possible. He summoned Mara Laura Jasnis, designer of user experience, and Ariel Lipschutz, developer of software, and together created AppRight, a platform mobile for the investigation of market that he has as objective to obtain different donations to NGO.

€œAny person unloads the application, takes some minutes to answer a survey and, when finalizing, it appears an amount of money that can be donated to a NGO that is selected of a list€, Utin explains. That silver does not leave the pocket of which responds the survey, but the company that pays by the service of investigation of market: a part goes to donations and another part to a commission for the undertaking.

At the moment they work with 20 foundations and the objective is to arrive at 50. The goal is to grow in Latin America. For three months the application has been available for Android telephones and now the version for iOS is developed, the operating system of Apple.

Community Offices

The convergence of the race of architect of Gonzalo Bardach with its experience as volunteer of Ceiling, gave the inspiration him necessary to submerge in the social emprendedorismo. The sensitivity that let so much the fact to him be near vulnerable families and as the daily contact with bricklayers, carpenters and plumbers in works, took to think it a labor social network that it allowed the people who realise offices to approach the contractors easily. Bardach, of 32 years, describes to its undertaking Community Offices as a €œshow window online for those who have the necessity to promote themselves and they only find a job by the mouth in mouth€. Today the platform is active and it is used free. With time, they hope to begin to mint and to find investments.

€œIt is difficult to find bottoms for social projects because some consider to put the money as a donation and not as an investment with return€, the architect comments, who obtained resources for the home of the activity after participating in contests of Socialab and of Buenos Aires He undertakes. Nevertheless, nondoubt at the time of explaining from where they leave his desire to follow: €œWhen happening long time with workers of office, I know that I must do something with respect to its problems and believe that solution, while it hits in the life of hundreds of people, can also be a great business€.
